Got an email saying the Visitors' Weekend invites have already gone out. Did not say I was officially rejected, but certainly won't receive an invite.

"Our Admissions Committee has completed its first review of applications, and we have forwarded letters of invitation to those applicants who were selected to attend our Department's Visitors’ Day (on February 16-17, 2012). Additional invitations will not be extended for our Visitors’ Day. It is possible, albeit not likely, that you have been placed on a waiting list and may be contacted after Visitors' Day."

Bumbled my way through the phone interview and somehow got an unofficial offer. Miracles happen, people!

Unofficial offer of researcher position, professor trying to gauge my interest in working with the projects he has available.

Congrats Berkeley admits! If you get asked about whether you want to be nominated for a university fellowship, the best response is this: "I am very interested in Berkeley but I do have a competing offer from another top program and funding will factor into my decision." (You are unlikely to get a fellowship if you say that you will definitely come to Berkeley, that you will probably not come to Berkeley or that finances won't influence your decision. Judging from last year, you also won't get a fellowship if you give a vague response that does not address the fellowship question.)
