"I am sorry to inform you that, after careful consideration, you have not been accepted into the English Graduate Program at the University of Iowa. In recent years the Department has reduced the size of each entering class—quite markedly this year, in view of the woeful academic job market. This has meant disappointing many fine applicants." You have to respect that. Congrats to everyone who got in!

Honestly can't believe I got in. I am SO excited.

Correction of previous submission. In recent years the Department has reduced the size of each entering class—quite markedly this year, in view of the woeful academic job market.

I'm a current graduate student here, and all I know is that they are looking for a small class for next year (~6 students), and one prospective student has come to visit so far

First offer. TA position. No messages from the other 8 schools.

Interviewed via Skype on February 13. Received early notice 2 weeks later. Told to wait for the paperwork for more details :)

Funded. Invited to visit.

I got a generic e-mail saying that I was rejected. I replied back asking for a specific reason. I got a reply that my GRE score did not meet the minimum criteria ( I fell short by 2 points). I applied to the program in November only after I told them about my GRE score. And I was told categorically that I can go ahead since the applications are looked as a package. Such a waste of time. If they had to tell me that the GRE score requirement is a hard minimum, I would have never applied. Anyway...praise the Lord!
