Interestingly, a professor had called me a few weeks after I submitted my application telling me that I'm a strong candidate, though they have limited funding.

Was interviewed before the final offer was made ! Funding in the form of GSI (TA) in the 1st year, and then GRA in the subsequent years

A prof. called to offer me a better financial deal. sounds good!! :)
