Generic rejection letter, offered admission to a related MS program

I had several informal interviews with my potential PI and was informed in late March that I had been placed on the waitlist. At that time, however, the ASU portal still showed my application as “In Review.” Throughout the process, I was not able to learn much about my status through the administrative office; when I asked, I was only told that my application was still with the committee. In practice, the only meaningful updates I received came from my potential PI. For those applying to SGSUP next year, I would strongly recommend staying in touch with your potential PI, since the official channels may not provide much clarity about where your application stands.
