Wanted to post as a cautionary tale. I have an MA, 4.0 in all graduate courses, two publications, strong letters, and have a 170/168/6.0 GRE breakdown. However, I attended and then withdraw a previous PhD program - and did not clarify the circumstances in my SOP. (At the advice of my referees). I was unfortunately rejected from every program to which I applied, even those ranked lower than the institution I left. When I inquired with the programs as to the reasons for my rejection, *every* one listed a concern for my ability to finish the program and confusion over whether I was leaving my current program after four years. If you've been rejected, reread your SOP with a critical eye and ensure it explains any potential misgivings an adcomm may have! I wish I did.
