Applied with multiple scholarly publications and few years of experience in the academia and media industry. I only applied as the grad chair told me that my proposal looked fascinating. Gotta stop listening to the professors before applying. I talked to a professor from an another university and he advised me not to apply as the department does not have anyone with similar research interest and the program is highly competitive. Now that's called being honest.
