- I co-authored a publication with a Prof. (a name in the field) from UC Berkeley. I was in contact with two Caltech faculty members from my subfield back in December and both were greatly encouraging: one telling me he's on the admissions committee and the other offering to chat over Zoom. About a month ago I found out that my most recent letter of recommendation is a bit sketchy, a risk I took by doing a master's in Germany (context: famous group, terrible atmosphere).
