- Automated email to check the portal. Very short rejection letter. I was waitlisted here two years ago so I'm a tiny bit surprised. Very tiny bit. Miniscule. Here's the thing: my application is objectively better now so this rejection only reinforces my belief that this process is just a lottery. Perhaps my application was reviewed in the late afternoon when the committee was hungry and tired and wanting to go home? Or maybe my POIs weren't on the committee this year, and instead it was a committee of people who feel indifference for my research area? Or maybe they read my application carefully and thought to themselves, "What a boring, halfwitted, desperate attempt at professional scholarship" before throwing my application materials into the rejection oven to heat their redbrick building. I can just see it, the pages of hundreds of applications and the application fees burning up together, paying for WUSTL's winter heat while the committee stands around, twiddling their fingers and laughing nefariously. Anyway, this is all to say that it's a subjective crock so don't let rejection get you down. GPA is MA. 2a/1r/7p
