- To the Carleton reject iit guy below. You were frustrated and ranted out your frustration by demonizing the university by saying that it accepts students from only tier-4 and tier-5 universities. I think it was right that you were put in your place. Moreover, the issue is not writing that you are from iit, the fact that it carries little weight makes writing is irrelevant. And when you spoke about studying day and night for 2 years to get into iit, other students have also put in equal if not more hard work than you and have gotten accept from these universities. So when you say that a particular university (that you got rejected from) only accepts students from Tier-4 and Tier-5 universities, it trashes their efforts. AFAIK, you are probably getting wrong advice regarding the importance of extracurriculars for admission to universities, so you might want to re-evaluate that as well. And work on improving your profile, what you did wrong etc. because there are thousands of students with a similar profiles as yours and thousands with even better profiles. Improve your profile, and don't expect that the admissions will be handed out to you on a platter. And yes, I got accept from CMU MCDS, Columbia, UMass, and NYU (7 rejects, 2 pending) and I am from one of the top private universities in India and many of my friends got in as well so you would be surprised when you compare their profile with yours and that they are leagues ahead in terms of gpa, recommendations, internship and research experience, as well as their publications.
