"We apologize that our admissions timeline is one to two weeks later than usual. We wanted to notify you of your admission status now that all applications have been reviewed by the English department graduate admissions committee. Indeed, we received a notably larger number of applications than in the past two years, for a purposefully smaller entering class of 10 to 12 doctoral students (compared to an entering class of 18 students last year). The committee read your application with interest. You are currently on our waitlist, albeit (for transparency) in the lower half. This means our admissions committee found your application compelling, and while we cannot offer you a place at present, it is possible that a space may open."
