- 1 published paper in top ML conference. Strong academics/GRE. Strong LOR all from industry contacts (~7 years work experience). I think what helped the most, however, was an unusual SOP. My background is doing software in public sector/nonprofit. Long-term goal is to improve government. Lots of extracurrics that show this (i.e. serving on city committees). My SOP about my public sector goals may have been unusual compared to most applicants.
