- TPB: I recently declined this offer. I think it would be better to wait, but also ask the department the likelihood to be admitted, especially a few days before the deadline. Think that: 1) Depts. have a strong interest in accepting now people that are going to accept, then signalling this has a non-negative effect on the decision about your status; 2) Some depts. could also be clear with you, especially right before the deadline, that the chances are very high (i.e., you are on the top of the waitlist) or very low (i.e., there are 1-2 spots not yet accepted and you are 20th in the waitlist).
