- TPB: Grad school application process seems pretty random and no one can tell for sure how it works out unless you are the insiders. However, I noticed that UNC is one of the few programs that explicitly explain their application criteria as far as they can in their website. They say they expect their applicants to have GRE quant scores minimum 90th percentile, which implies they might use automatic filter to just filter out low quant score candidates. I have a perfect quant and very low verbal scores and I feel that most of the schools also filter out their applicants based on GRE scores first. I have good GPAs from a competitive undergrad and grad programs in the US and strong LORs, but the programs that I thought safe rejected me and I felt like my application was never even reviewed. But it makes sense. They receive hundreds applications each year and it is just too naive for us to think they will really carefully review hundreds of application like they say "they did" in the rejection emails. They just filter out based on their own criteria to narrow down to a small number of pool of candidates and then start reviewing. GRE and GPA are the only quantitative metrics they can use to filter. But good luck to your application as they still say GRE is one of the guiding factors, not the only one and I believe your work experience is really exceptional and outstanding amongst other candidates.
