- Here is the email: Thank you for your application to the University of Washington Graduate School. Thank you for your application to the University of Washington's Human Centered Design & Engineering PhD program. I am writing to inform you that the admissions committee has reviewed your application but unfortunately is unable to offer you admission for Autumn 2019. This was a very difficult decision. This year we had the largest and most competitive applicant pool to date, and we had the capacity to admit fewer than 20% of applicants. The admissions committee carefully considered academic backgrounds, personal statements, resumes, recommendations, GPAs, GRE scores, TOEFL scores (for international applicants), and availability of potential faculty advisors. Given the volume of applications, we regret that we are unable to offer personalized feedback or suggest ways to strengthen your application for the future. As overall feedback, the most competitive applicants had resumes and personal statements that demonstrated a clear personal and research fit with both the faculty and department, an outstanding academic track-record evidenced by transcripts and recommendations, and exemplary GRE and TOEFL scores (for international applicants). Again, the decisions were difficult for the admissions committee because the majority of candidates were strong in many of these categories and thus the most competitive candidates had to be those ranking highly in every category.
