Well, the last "OTHER" poster just decided the debate over what counts with prestigious schools when they make their selections. Remember guys the poster who went to low-ranking schools but had a great manuscript (he/she said it was nominated for several awards) and he/she was accepted by all the not-so-prestigious schools, including some highly ranked programs, but not even waitlisted by any of the prestigious ones (yet he/she was accepted at Iowa)? And then someone else posted that he/she went to a low-ranking school as well and was not accepted anywhere "fancy" either, despite a 99 percentile GRE and top GPA? Here is a poster who did not score high on the TOEFL therefore his or her English cannot be that great (I can say this because I have taken the TOEFL so I know what I'm talking about, and being a non-native speaker myself I am not being culturally insensitive), he/she has a GPA under 3.0 BUT he/she went to a prestigious school - and he is now on a wait list for Cornell and several Ivy-ish schools. No offense to anyone, but the fact is, where you went to school matters, despite programs stating that "it is all about the writing quality." In fact where you went to school seems to matter more than GREs,TOEFL scores and GPAs. Like another poster suggested, I doubt programs even get to your manuscript if you don't make the cut otherwise. As for the advice to the OTHER poster - if you definitely want to stay in the US don't take chances with the wait list. Pick a program you have already been accepted to; the one you like the most and, if finances matter to you, one that gives you good funding. If finances do not matter disregard funding criteria. Good luck and don't take what I have said about the TOEFL score to heart - language can be acquired.
