- This sucks. I wanted this so bad, but it didn’t go my way and I failed. I didn’t even get waitlisted which means I wasn’t even close. It’s a stark reminder that sometimes your best is not enough. I have a 1st class degree/GPA 3.95+ (equivalent) from a respected university in Europe, teaching experience at said university, three strong LORs, a SOP which impressed and was reviewed by three Oxbridge alumni, a number of extra-curricular activities highly relevant to the programme I applied to, and two writing samples which I had gotten high marks on previous professors. At least other attractive career alternatives presented themselves shortly before this rejection which cushioned the blow; otherwise, I probably would have felt crushed right at this moment as this has been my primary motivator for the better part of two years. But now, finally, the wait is over; sitting and updating my email for the past 8 weeks has been arguably the most debilitating part of this whole process. I wish I could have gotten this rejection a little bit earlier so I wouldn’t have put my life on hold waiting for a disappointing email, but alas, that is my own fault. I tried and failed, getting rejected can be devastating, but it’s not the end of the world. The only way to move is forward. I’m certain studying at Oxford would have been a pleasure and an amazing experience, but it’s not a ticket straight to happiness and success. There are other ways to achieve that and you shouldn’t let this rejection define you or your future. To everyone who accepted, congratulations. Enjoy and make the most out of your time at Oxford.
