Rejected by ambitious schools (MIT, UCB) and safe(r) ones (BU, UCLA) but accepted by medium ones (UMich, UChicago). Moral of the story- no matter how good your contacts and communication with a prospective advisor, it will be irrelevant to the Admission committee.
