- I am writing on behalf of the Linguistics graduate admissions committee at UC Berkeley to report that we have carefully reviewed your application, but we are unable to recommend you for admission to our program. This year was the most competitive admission cycle in anyone's memory, with over 185 applicants and an incoming target class size of fewer than 10 students. It is painful to have to turn down so many talented young scholars, but at least the strength and enthusiasm of the applicant pool gives us hope for the future of our field.
