- "I want to thank you for applying for admission to the Graduate Program of the Department of Sociology and the Department of Community and Environmental Sociology at UW-Madison for Fall 2026. The Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee has made its final decisions, and I am sorry to report that we are unable to offer you admission to the program. The committee thoroughly examines each application and considers a wide range of factors when selecting applicants, including academic record, transcripts, statement of purpose and applicant’s goals, letters of reference, writing sample, previous research experience, fit with our program, and the probability of each candidate`s success in the type of program we offer. No one of these factors outweighs the others; rather they are examined in combination. Regrettably, we have way more qualified and deserving applicants than we can possibly admit. This year, we reviewed 390 applications, in line with our previous year. Furthermore, due to changes in our graduate program, we now admit fewer students than we have in the past. As a result, many fine applicants are turned away from our program. Our decisions about admission should therefore not be taken as a judgment about your overall potential for graduate study. Many who are refused here go elsewhere and do superbly. We hope that will be the case for you.
