- GPA was grad (undergrad was a fair time ago), regional university. Pre-PhD adjuncting in methods (R, stats necessary for research design), recent conference presentation, designed and conducted original survey experiment using an online panel that will likely either be an R&R or published over the next year, data science internship and consulted a local nonprofit on data science tasks, had four faculty I could plausibly work with, methods training far beyond what is reasonable to expect from a doctoral applicant, and excellent letters of rec from faculty I've worked closely with. SOP, personal statement, and writing sample was written in LaTeX. I get that it's a stochastic process, but jesus man, how much stronger does my signal need to be? With all due respect, what do you guys want from us? Any direction, even vague direction, would be helpful for applicants.
